I did a lot of research on how to study digital marketing since it’s such a broad topic, and once you start to study it, the chaos takes over. It’s inevitable and it’s also good because if you are confused, then you’re probably doing something right, right?! ?!?!
Because it’s a relatively new area of study, so there is no specified pattern to follow.
But I do found out that the rule in this field is “To first pick one topic and study the f** out of it”.
It means first not to study all the areas of digital marketing but to focus on one fundamental area and then become kind of an expert on it until you feel that you have probably read everything there is to it and you are ready to move on to other areas.
The two fundamental areas you can choose- either “SEO” or “Paid/Google Ads”.
Once you understand them in depth, other areas will become much more easier to understand.
That is why I am focused on SEO at the moment and I am not really touching on any other aspect. I advise you to do the same. Keep it simple! I know it’s tempting to read about everything and explore new things but it only leads to information overload.
- You will probably still make the mistake of reading too much in the beginning. It’s okay, what’s important is to be aware of it, and not be discouraged.
- Once you know when to stop, everything will be organised.
First step:
- Start with digital marketing fundamentals-
1. What is it?
2. Why do companies use it?
3. What areas are there?
– Basically have an overview of all the broad areas on the outside.
Next step:
Then the next step would be to choose what you are interested in.
I would say SEO is better because it is interesting, has immense resources published online and you can start to apply it right away.
SEO is such a broad area. I started a month ago and I am still on it because it kind of encompasses all the topics related to search results, websites, content, algorithms etc. Plus to learn SEO, knowledge of tools is also important so this covers that as well.
It is a study on its own but once you have a grasp of SEO, you have learnt a substantial amount of digital marketing. Then you can move on to learn Google Ads, Social media marketing, Brand marketing, various CRM tools etc
Tip#1: Application is very important. Unlike traditional marketing, digital marketing has an applied approach. As soon you start reading, see if you can work on it on a website.
Tip#2: Before heading to SEO, be sure to have your own website, and put some content in it. You can just write anything or copy-paste your past projects. It does not matter. Then start to apply the concepts on your website and analyse the statistics.
You are probably at this level right now and I am here to simplify the process for you as much as I can.
I am also a beginner, That’s why I only post about the topics that we as beginners should focus on.
When I was at the confused stage, I got inspiration from some videos and things got much clearer afterwards. I highly suggest checking this Linkedin post for digital marketing career advice.
